Hi, I am a RAW newbie!

I started going RAW on Jan.1st 2008. I started for health reasons and seeing a rheumatolosist tomorrow. I am not so sure I need him now as most of the pain in my body is gone. That’s right- GONE! Halleluja!!!

I have not had a 100% Raw day yet. Today has been very close though.I have lost eight pounds this far. I hope to get there and stay there! I would say I am 80 % depending on a couple of following questions.

I have got so many qustions, like is Ezekial products considered raw and what about tofutti or tempeh? I am guessing- No. Also I am having the worst heartburn on this new lifestyle change. Any ideas or remedies?

Please, someone help this newbie stay RAW! :)

Looking forward to meeting you all!
Tina

  • Hi Tina!
I am not 100% and very content at 80%...works well with my family needs…want to eat like everyone else once and a while. That is me for now. Everyone’s different and I respect that

Congrats on your decision and your lack of pain. Question re heartburn…are you “combining” your food properly?

  • Hi Hippie Chick and Thanks for responding!

Can you tell me what “combining is actually”. I know what Suzanne Somers said. I did have dates and bannan’a for breakfast. I thought that would be okay. I had Ezekial cereal with rice milk for lunch and I had the raw taco salad for dinner. I seem to get this heartburn with every meal this far. I actually had to take a zantac since I posted. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

  • Hi again! I am not so good at this, but if you type in “combining” on the left hand box of FORUMS you can search for lots of good stuff that folks have shared. I hope this helps.
P.S. Sounds like my breadkfast. Yum!!!

Correct, ezequiel bread is not raw, neither is tofutti.

    Here’s a link on heartburn: http://goneraw.com/forums/3/topics/996
(there may be more and more informative ones) But, in that forum, someone mentions Boutenko’s green smoothies. We are actually doing the green smoothies… we are on day 35. I must say that… I had a small burp/acid-reflux type thing happen last week… and it did feel quite acidic compared to before the green smoothies. Not the best feeling… but I’m quite pleased about that! Still trying to see if my digestion is improved (which is why I’m doing the green smoothies). I’m not taking as much as she recommended… probably half. But, that’s okay with me… slowly, but surely… and more affordably. Hope that helps.

  • Germin8- If you want to up the smoothies ( I am amazed to be drinking about 40oz each morning) I would consider using spinach. Its flavor seems to disappear. With a pear and banana it is totally palatable. I read that you shouldn’t have spinach daily though.

Keep up the good work. Guys!!!

  • Thank you both so much! You have both been wonderful help!!!

  • My pleasure…have a great day :)

Yes, Hippie Chick… you shouldn’t have the same greens every day for 3+ months… well, that’s what V. Boutenko says in Green for Life. According to her, greens have a toxin that adds up slowly and in 3 months you’ll see the effects of the toxins.

    So vary the greens! :o)

  • Great info…I love that book. I guess I need to reread it!

Ezekiel bread is cooked, toffutti is made from cooked ingredients and tempeh’s not a raw ingredient either, it is made from cooked soy beans. Basically, anything that is prepackaged, in a jar or a can unless is specifically says it is a raw food product, it not raw.

Sticking to whole fresh untampered with foods as a raw fooder means our rubbish is 99% vegetable/fruit waste, it is amazing when I look at other people’s rubbish (yes I am odd that way!) and 99% of it is old packaging, food containers, and plastic.

  • Thanks Zoe. That has kind of clicked with me today when I was explaining some things to my husband. I told him if I didn’t make my food from raw fruits and vegetables, it was simply not 100% raw. After days of being on this diet, my head seems to be alot clearer. I am longing to be 100% raw!

I hate sounding like The Voice of Doom, but I think it is better to be informed about these foods even if it means cutting out things we have grown accustomed to eating.

  • Well I am ready to give up the tofutti and the tempeh, but I think for now I will keep the Ezekial bread in for a feeling of substance. Sometimes I feel like a sandwich is needed. I haven’t really got into my dehydrater yet to make my own raw bread.
