Hi All - Raine's Intro

Hi all! I’m Raine, wife to J for 16+ years, mom to two fabulous humans- DS age 17 and DD age 14. We own a brick and mortar game store, and sell online.

I’ll try to make my intro short. I’ve studied diet and health for some time. Stumbled upon raw a few years ago and became very excited about it. Time constraints made me drop everything for a while, and more recently I’ve been reading a fair amount of Abraham-Hicks and have come to believe that our thoughts are the most important aspect of health.

For the last year or so my husband has been mentioning raw on and off. He picked up Carol Alt’s book a few weeks ago and decided he really wants to do it. I’m behind him 100% as I still have that same excitement about it.

We both have some bad habits, smoking and an extreme love of coffee, which may present a challenge. We intend to transition in a gentle manner, without restrictions or guilt.

For myself, being pretty much sedentary from working online, and the stresses of running two businesses 7 days a week for the past 3 years, is taking it’s toll on me. I’m 35 and don’t have the energy or level of fitness that I would like. My body is making it clear that it is not content with the status quo. I’m inclined to sit up and listen.

In short, I’m here to learn from all of you who are where I plan to be. Looking forward to meeting you all.

  • Hi Raine! ( I know you’ve heard this a million times, I love your name!).I, like you and your husband am transitioning slowly, some days are good and some aren’t so good. I am a vegan all of the time though. I too smoke, I quit every so often, and drink my coffee in the mornings.I agree about not feeling guilt because even if we slip up we are doing better than we were before! I am 48 with 3 grown kids and 2 young grandkids, my husband and I own our own business also and winter in our area is extremely slow so we are pretty sedentary ourselves.Anyway welcome, I don’t post very often but read the posts several times a day!

Any positive changes are good. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Transistion is a good thing.

I used to smoke a LOT. I weighed 300 pounds, I was unhappy as a lawyer, I drank a pot of coffee by noon every day, had super high blood pressure and was unhappily married to an opiate-popping pharmacist.

Then, almost 10 years ago I woke up one morning to the news a girlfriend had died of breast cancer at 32 years old, and something clicked. Something deep. I started transitioning right then and there.

Now….I weigh 100 pounds less….I ditched the anorexic addict husband in ‘98 and recently married a brillant Russian who loves my curves and wishes there were more!, eliminated gluten….then dairy (except half and half in my morning cup of coffee)...then red meat, soy, sugar, then all meat.

Slowly slowly I’m working my way to raw, Slowly I see the effect of all my bad habits reverse themselves. I look younger now than I did five years ago. I feel so much better, My biggest “vices” are coffee in the morning and red wine with dinner and I can live with that. :)

    So….welcome, You’ll love it here.

  • Thank you for the warm responses! The reason I chose this site was that the members seem very kind and reasonable. Some groups can be a bit rabid, which is scary for new people.

Gwen, wow our stories are pretty similar! Susanna, oh I forgot my love of red wine too!

  • Hello Raine, welcome to Gone Raw :)

Welcome Raine, I’m glad you decided to join. Reading goneraw made me decide to go 99% raw. I’m delighted that so many folks are willing to share their personal successes and pitfalls, favorite books and juicy tidbits of information. It’s so inspiring. Plus, there are so many great recipes that i HAVE to eat 99% raw – how else could I get around to trying all the recipes out? I have a vice though – infrequently, i’ve got to have a glass of wine. Perhaps raw wine is the way to go. If someone had told me 4 years ago that I would one day be a raw vegan – i NEVER would have believed them! My diet has improved slowly due to all the nutrition literature I read, as I see you have been doing as well. I recommend Victoria Boutenko’s books and Gabriel Cousen’s books, if you want to know the nutrition and biological science behind raw foods. It’s truly fascinating, but difficult to sum up in a few sentences. Once you know the science behind raw food, it really inspires you to eat raw. Also, it’s good to understand the concept of elimination – by eliminating all wheat and refined sugar, for starters, you’re allowing the body to heal itself. Although the raw food provides great nutrition, it’s ultimately staying away from the bad foods that allows your body to mend. Food for thought! (disclaimer – i can’t explain the concept well, as I’m not a nutritionist or biologist—read the books above for a greater understanding of the concept)
