Hair!

Hello everybody! I have been 100% raw for almost 3 weeks now (YAY!! My record… I want to go at least 1 month!) and today I noticed something different. My hair is very oily and I always had to wash it daily, but since saturday I’ve been washing every other day. I’m not sure, but it probably has something to do with my diet.. I just wanted to share that.. I love when I notice things are changing due to my eating habits and I would like to know people’s experiences..

  • Hey carlamartins- I am on day 3 of 100% raw and am doing it with a doctor friend of mine (she’s on day 3 also) and today she came in to work saying she was losing weight but her hair was so oily even after she washed it. usually it is more dry- weird huh?

  • That it very weird!! Maybe she started detoxing or something… I am loosing weight too! It feels so good, because I’m not even trying! In fact I’ve been eating a lot! Yesterday my boyfriend said that I’ve never been so thin… And I feel great! That’s what gives me strength to continue.. I don’t even feel like eating cooked food!

I’ve noticed the same thing carla! I love having to wash it only every other day now. I’ve been 100% for 3 months now, and this weekend, I ate some cooked vegan while on vacation for 3 days (it was almost impossible to even find cooked vegan), and my hair and skin have been super oily since. I can’t wait to dry out again!

Hair is a very spiritual thing, and god has lots of.it.

  • Oh, boy, not with the religious stuff again…..not everyone believes in “god.” (meaning it’s not necessary to mention these fictitious beings in every post, especially when it has nothing to do with the topic, just as the atheists don’t mention their lack of belief in certain things that others might choose to believe in in every post – it’s annoying, doesn’t contribute to any meaningful conversation, and isn’t based on reality). Someone asked about hair, for goodness sake! They didn’t ask what you thought about this being you believe in and whether it has hair.

Anyway, try not using soap; the shampoo and conditioner are no good for your hair.

Glad you like your hair better now!

I like having beautiful skin, less fat, and tons of energy. I haven’t been able to do no shampoo because of my work place but I’m definitely going to as soon as I can.

    God has hair?=confused

  • Superfood: you go girl! hahaha.. I like you already!.. And. No shampoo?? Really? I stopped the conditioner, but it seems like if I don’t shampoo all the oil will still be there.. But I’ll try that! Thanks!!

  • greenghostgreenghost Raw Newbie

Thank you Superfood, I agree. It’s a shame that it has to be said, but after the hijacking of a couple of other forums I also feel that the brakes have to be put on quickly. I mean, for a while there I was worried about this site turning into “the religious raw”...and it (religion) is very distracting to the topics into which it is inserted.

  • Sure, no problem.

For no shampoo, you can use baking soda as a “wash” and apple cider vinegar as a rinse. I don’t have many tangles at all!

A real informative and extensive thread on everything you ever wanted to know about no ”’pooing” can be found on To shampoo or not to shampoo?.

PS. I know some people, including me, are a bit “raw” over the previous religious postings, but I think Slosh-uh’s comment is very much tongue-in-cheek… just look closely at her avatar for a laugh. :)

I use a shampoo I got for my cats on my hair…. i’ve only used it after I brought them home from the shelter, but it’s great! makes your hair feel weird in the shower, but once it dries it is so soft. it’s called cloud nine. here’s a link… all natural oils.. smells yummy http://shop.halopets.com/Herbal-Shampoo

  • I don’t suppose we can remember everyone’s personalities and religions on here, so it’s probably best to keep the religious propaganda and jokes to oneself, considering we are bombarded with it sometimes on raw boards.

  • greenghostgreenghost Raw Newbie

    Exactly.
btw cherie03 I don’t believe that anyone is trying to label anyone else or attack them. :(
It’s more of an issue of what has happened in past forums and not wanting to go there again.
    No ill wished to Slosh-uh.

I am no poo here for almost a year and a half and starter of that shampoo thread.

No poo is the best thing I have done for my hair. :) I do the water rinse not the BS/ACV.

I believe that raw foodist do the best on no poo. I think it is because they have less “unnatural oils” in their diets. That is probably why your hair may seem less oily. But the LESS you shampoo the LESS oily your hair will be. The shampoo itself causes overproduction of hair oil because it unnaturally overdries your hair causing your scalp to go into a hyperproduction mode of sebum (natural hair oil). You may find that one day you will stop having to use shampoo at all.

But still make sure you get some oil in your diet – meaing good oils like olive, avocadoes and coconut oils or you could have too dry fragile hair. I know for myself I don’t often eat enough of my oils and my hair is on the dry side (seems backwards doens’t it – I don’t use any shampoo but hair is still not really oil). I have been trying to get more oils in on a daily basis – an avocado, olives, coconut.

Just a thought, sense god is used in lower case it can mean anything.Like food is their god.Or to some men or women there hair can be their god. What ever.

By the way, 3 weeks into no poo. The thing I need to know, do I rinse the salt water rinse out? Thanks queenfluff.

  • Superfood, you had this good advice on another forum, right? : )

Superfood writes, 2 hours ago: (71 posts) Sometimes on message boards, we hear things we don’t want to hear and/or get upset and blame a poster. If what I said had no merit, why not just laugh it off? You can’t blame me if you’re upset.

  • Thank you queenfluff.. I’m going to try no poo because I do get enough of my oils.. probably even more than what I’m supposed to.. I love avocado and eat them almost every day a little bit…

beany – Yes, you should rinse out the sea salt rinse – unless you want to have really thick, “setted” hair. What I mean by that is sea salt rinse can also be used as a natural hair spray replacement. It has some hold and stick to it and will make you hair feel like you might have some “product” in it. If you have gone swimming in the ocean and not rinsed out your hair with fresh water after, you will know what I mean. :)

Sea salt rinse helps remove the oils. So, you can put it in and either rinse out right away (after massaging a bit through hair and scalp) or you can leave it in for a few minutes and than rinse. If you have alot of oilies, leaving it in for a few minutes can help remove more oil.

But too much sea salt left in the hair can dry out hair so be careful with it. Just doing the rinses in the shower shouldn’t dry out the hair though.

Thanks about the poo. I have fine, dry hair.Yes, I eat lots of nuts and avocados and flax seed. Would like to keep salt in for body but best rinse it out. Thanks again

This is all totally new to me and so intriguing! It makes perfect sense…if you’re gonna stop stuffing chemicals and crap down your gullet, why continue smushing them into your body via your hair and skin? Better for your body, and it’s gotta be cheaper, and better for the planet…no big plastic bottles to throw away!

I’ve actually run to the store tonight after reading all this and made my own conditioner! I put a whole avocado, about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, and enough olive oil and a little water to help it process down through the food processor, and now have a container of thick, rich conditioner sitting in my fridge! I can’t wait to try it tomorrow!

I’m a little lost on the no poo options though. I have kinda long curly hair that’s been chemically colored at home (like once every 4-6 months maybe), and it’s quite thin, dry and brittle. It often lacks body on top and gets poofy at the bottom. I’m not planning on giving up fish (I know I know) and eat it a couple times a week, and I’m starting to take fish oil supplements, but no avail yet in the hair department. I normally poo/condition every other day or so, and put in a little leave in conditioner at the bottom. I’ve been wanting to grow my hair long for years, but it just won’t grow at all. I know there’s new growth (albeit VERY slow) cuz I see my natural color coming in at my scalp, but it just doesn’t get any longer, ever! I desperately want it to grow! So I’m a little skittish at the though of putting sea salt in my hair…I had a shampoo from Lush once that contained very gritty sea salt, and it just tore my hair apart and made it even more dry and brittle and frizzy. :( I’m afraid of the acidity of vinegar or lemon juice drying it out as well, but I need something clarifying enough so my hair can get some much needed body at the roots. The baking soda label reads almost as bad as the shampoo label for chemicals I can’t pronounce. :(

Any ideas of how I can clean my hair, and get it full of body and bounce but not dry so it could maybe grow? Has anyone tried that honey/lemon combo? (Honey’s really expensive in any substantial quantity though) Or the straight soaked ground flax? (I have a bag of flaxseed meal…can I soak this for the same effect?)

Sorry for all the annoying questions…I’m EXTREMELY protective/conscious of/paranoid about my hair…it’s a very defining physical characteristic for me, always has been…it’s kinda my not so secret weapon, and literally the only part of my appearance I like and have any real confidence it, honestly.

Branwyn – ALthough it is a long thread – you might want to browse through the “To shampoo or not to shampoo thread?” in this section. It has a lot of tips.

Basially, though you don’t have to use anything but water to rinse (wash) your hair. I only use the sea salt like once a week or less. Other than that I use regular water (I have a shower filter though – chlorine in the water is very drying to the hair and skin – please get one).

There is a book called “Curly Girl” – I don’t know if you have ever heard of it but apparently the “no poo” method is very recommended for people with curly hair. Since curly hair is is almost always on the dry side, not shampooing is the best to keep in the natural oils.

Lemon will work to get out the oilies. Honey is more for conditioning. You can make a wash of Flax seeds but honestly, you don’t really need anything to “clean” the hair except water. Water gets out the majority of any dirt, dust or whatever might have accumulated in your hair during the day. Baking soda works very similar to shampoo so, in my opinion, it defeats the purpose of no poo but some people like it – I think it is good for buildup removal but not every day use.

Oh, one word of caution about the hair condition you just made! That is a VERY heavy combo and if you are not using shampoo to remove it, you will realize that your hair will get VERY oily. It takes oils like those a while to come out of the hair (they will eventually disspate by themselves which is what they are supposed to do but it doens’t work like “commerical” conditioner). I would use VERY little of the mixture you made and rinse VERY well.

But from what you describe about your hair I think no poo will work excellently for you! It will be a bit gross in the beginning but you will have better curlies and softer hair. If I were you, I would just do water rinsing (you have to rinse for a while to remove any excess sebum) and use your new homemade conditioner sparingly. (I would use it more like a light leave in – it will help with curl definition).

For slow hair growth – Mine grows slow too. I would recommend you start scalp massages – that will help get the blood flowing to your scalp and start eating good hair foods. MSM is great for hair – you might try start taking that as a supplement.

Also, it might be that your hair IS growing but you don’t notice it because your hair is dry and brittle and the end might just be breaking off. Get the ends trimmed.

Good luck! Let me know if I can help anymore.

  • I put avocado oil on my hair once for a half an hour; it was great. I also buy a Talulah product with avocado oil to protect my ends.

I used natural shampoos and conditioners for years prior to stopping; I think no poo is best for oil balance and body. But there clearly are chemical-free hair-care products out there as well.

Queenfluff- Thank you SO much! You rock! And thanks for the cautioning on my new conditioner too…I’m very used to literally having to use HANDFULS of commercial conditioner to make any difference in my hair, and just to be able to get a comb through it while wet…I would go through AT LEAST 2 bottles of conditioner with ever bottle of shampoo…so I was ready to glop the avocado on my head like it was going out of style! I will use sparingly. :)

What is MSM? I may try a little flax seed meal just today to wash with, to get the product buildup out…I use alot of mousse to get any body/definition in my hair…I wonder if there’s a natural alternative? What really is the purpose of the ACV with the baking soda method? I have some, but I dunno about using it for my hair at all…plus I don’t want to smell like vinegar.

Off to find the other no poo thread! Thank you so much!

I am also NO POO! I love it that my hair is 100% raw too! :-D About four months after being no-poo, I shaved my entire head down to the root, and now it’s growing back so beautiful, soft and curly!

  • I’m no-poo too! My hair looks fantastic and feels great. Even better, it dries faster and I don’t need to blow it dry. There is a good community on live journal with info on no-poo. It is worth experimenting to make sure you do it right- it took me a while to realize that water washes are good, that I don’t need baking soda every time, and that when I do, I should be getting a slippery feeling- and if not, I should adjust my mixtures.

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

    Branwyn -

If you do the avocado, concentrate on the ends mostly. You can probably use a very small whole one and it should work out OK but just to caution about if you are not shampooing it out if will seem like you didn’t get it all out – what remains are the lovely oils. Yes, you definately won’t have to use huge amount of the new conditioner – I used to be like that too – I would like more is better and in this case it isn’t! :)

The other day I did a bananna/coconut meat.milk conditioner and my hair felt great but after it dried I found a few little bits of banana in there! Ha ha! I rinsed for 15 minutes too! I guess they got dried up! :)

For the styling products – yes, there are alternatives! For gel sub, use aloe vera (fresh is best but you can use a tube one – try to get the most natural and pure you can). For hair spray, use a mixture of sea salt and water. I think you will find though that once you get started on the no poo and your scalp and hair adjusts that you won’t need any products. The no poo will give you better curls and more thickenss and body – yes hard to imagine but it is true.

I had stick straight thin hair when on shampoo now my hair actually has some curl, looks thicker and has body! Get this -If i put it in rollers because i want more curls, It gets TOO curly! Curls never stayed in my hair before! And the curls don’t fall out now either before they would go flat in an hour!

MSM is organic sulfur – almost everyone is deficient in it because of the way our modern food is grown. It get destroyed by cooking. It is very good for hair, skin and nails.

Flax seed won’t get out your product buildup. To get a “fresh start” with no product buildup I would do baking soda (very little bit) or do a dilute white vinegar rinse (1 tbsp to 2 cups water). These are only to do very occasionally – not everyday. There are also some herbal rinses you can do – rosemary removes oilies and is helpful for dandruff. (you basically make a tea and let it cool and pour through your hair)

The purpose of the ACV rinse after the BS wash is that it is supposed to seal the cuticle and make the hair be more smooth. To me, it just left my hair feeling slick and unclean but I guess it is considered the “conditioner” part of the process. I think alot of people don’t realize it but you are supposed to rinse the vinegar out – which is why people often complain about the smell because they leave it in. I never notice too strong a smell. Also, if you do use it – you don’t need a lot of it- you could probably even dilute it. I like the smell of vinegar so I didn’t really notice it – but the method never worked for me anyhow.
