flax seed makes me sick

hi everyone. i have tried several recipes using flax seed – both ground & whole (cinnamon rolls, pancakes, 2 types of bread) and each time i get sick. i usually have stomach pains and nausea off & on for several days and alternating severe bloating & diahrrea. i have concluded that flax + me = no good! can anyone recommed a substitution in recipes – especially the bread recipes? i absolutely adore the onion bread recipe that kandace posted but i have tried it twice and gotten sick both times. major bummer. thanks in advance for any advice!

Try chia seeds. They also have the mucilagenous properties flax has. You won’t notice the difference in texture, but the color is grey/black.

  • thanks! i’ve never heard of them before. will check it out.

You could also try hemp seeds as a substitute.

Did you ever figure out why this happens?

  • i didnt figure out why it happened yet but i did try remaking the bread with hemp seed (thanks for the suggestion spiritedmama!). hemp did not make me sick (bloated, diahrrea) but it seems like too many nuts or seeds in any given day do cause me to have loose and oily stool the next day. sorry to be so blunt! i think i was either eating way too much fat or i have also heard that parasites can cause this. i’m going to have some blood work run later this week and go see my acupuncturist/oriental medicine doctor to see what he says..

I would try the chia seeds as suggested above. They work just like flax and you might not have a bad reaction. Have a super day! You can find chia seeds at http://www.goldminenaturalfood.com/

  • Weird. I think I have had the very same reaction but to raw pumpkin seeds. The first time it happened I thought I got a horrible case of food posioning but the second time I ate a bunch of pumpkin seeds in one day I had the very same reaction. Could it be an allergy? Or maybe parasites? I know that pumpkin seeds can help expell parasites. I also didn’t soak them before I ate them so maybe that could have caused the reaction? I don’t know. I’ve never been a big fan of seeds or nuts either. So maybe I’ll just stay away from most of them.

    Love the cutie kitten.

Try increasing veggies in your recipes with just a little of ground seeds. I have to use low amounts of nuts and seeds otherwise I would feel sick. Your body obviously doesn’t need them. Also, I like to grind up savoury seeds and gomasio and keep them in the fridge. I use it to garnish my food. Making seed sauces are also good to add to food. You could try making flat bread using buckwheat and smaller amounts of flax and sesame.

  • I used Chia seeds for the first time today. Yummy! I just did a search for them and used them accordingly instead of adding water to my recipe. Flax can get rancid and must be bought from a place w/ high turn-over, and must be kept refrigerated.
