Evert Fresh bags... what am i doing wrong? :(

I bought a pack of evert fresh bags, the green ones that you’re supposed to store produce in and amazingly 45 days later your carrots still look like carrots (well, that’s from the picture on the front). I stored my lettuce in a bag, wrapped it up/twisted the end closed, and compressed out the air as much as I could and it didn’t last any longer than it would have in my regular tupperware container… and my tomatoes were starting to get mushy by day 4. Anybody use these things and have wonder stories to share?

  • That’s strange – I use these bags often and have had pretty good results. I don’t ever squeeze the air out, although I do bother to tie the end with a twisty tie. My greens don’t usually last too long in the refrigerator, but once in a while I’ll find a half empty bag (that has somehow been missed underneath a pile of other greens) with one to two week old veggies in them – and while they might not be fresh and vibrant, they’re certainly not mushy and gross.

Is your refrigerator cold enough? I know greens will stay better in super cold temperatures (not freezing tho’ – as once they start to thaw they turn to mush.)

I put my wheat sprouts in one and they lasted a long time. I didn’t want to eat them after a few days but kept them in their just for curiousity’s sake and about 2 weeks into it, they still looked great! I know it says make sure there is no moisture in there. I did chopped up lettuce and it really didn’t last long, turned brown just like yours. I will let you know what happens to the other veggies I have in them.
