To eat Breakfast or to Not to eat Breakfast???

shgadwashgadwa Raw Newbie

Logically, because of detoxifying in the morning and saving money on food, it makes pure sense to skip breakfast as do people on the Hallelujah diet. But should it be eaten or skipped? Beings that I am still breaking my fast, right now I am just drinking more fluids in the morning and I try to take some kind of green powder and or wheatgrass juice. I get hungry at about 11:30 but usually do not eat until as close to noon as possible.

Comments

  • I usually start my day with 32 oz of water (sometimes with lemon/msm, other times alone). About an hour or two later, I drink 32 oz of green juice. That usually lasts me for a couple of hours and sets me up with energy for the rest of the day.

  • I think lemon water and green juice is a great way to start the day—we drink Natalia Rose’s green lemonade in the a.m. It’s a good detox for your system.

i do mostly liquids in the morning. but i wonder if not eating in the morning perpetuates my night eating problem.

  • I love breakfasts! Small or big, they’re usally lighter, such as fruit till noon, smoothie, juicy fruits, or juice. I think breakfast gets me going in the morning. But everyone is different. But I usually like to wait till I’m hungry in the a.m. till I eat, which isn’t very long. I drink 1-2 glasses of water before breakfast.

  • I strongly believe that you should never eat purely for the sake of it. For years I forced breakfast down – even though I was never hungry first thing in the morning! – because of everyone saying it was the most important meal of the day etc.. Now I know that was rubbish so I don’t do it any more!

But by the same token: if you’re hungry, definitely have something. Liquids are possibly the best breakfast during detox (smoothies preferable to juices so you get the fibre too) because your body has to do minimal processing to get them digested, leaving more time and energy for the ongoing detox process.

I’d say you’re doing about right, since you don’t get hungry till 11.30. In my opinion however you shouldn’t push the eating back till noon though. Eat when hungry! The more you do this, the easier it becomes to tune into what your body needs and is asking for at any particular time.

Thank you all for your help. It confirms what I believe to be true. Breakfast is not the most important meal of the day but, nutrition is a must. I will stick to green powder, juice and smoothies.

  • Lately, I’m having only Fenugreek soak water or Lime juice with Honey for my breakfast and lunch by 12-12:30. I’m finding breakfast increasingly unnecessary. Having said that, I should also add that I’m a late guy, gets up around 8-8:30, and goes to office around 10-10:30. So, it may be different to all those you early birds.

  • i love to keep it liquid in the morning…Green juice and green smoothies..the best way to start the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a big container of green smoothie can keep me going until 2 or 3 in the afternoon…

i eat very lightly in the morning (green smoothie and fruit), but i work hard for it doing intense yoga first thing. i think its fine as long as you sweat for it.

  • I agree with chefraw16. A Green Smoothie is a great way to start the day with energy. Sometimes I will start with a papaya or pineapple instead if i am having, um, digestive problems. Both are VERY high in digestive enzymes. Speaking of that… I just learned that you should ‘chew’ your smoothie. This helps with digestion of liquids.

I wake up starving!! I eat 10 to 15 bananas first thing! Then Im good till about 930,10 am then I eat another 10 to 15 bananas! then a few apples in the late afternoon and a huge green salad for dinner! Just greens, no vegetables and tomatoes. Im very active and work from 6 am to 6 am, no desk jobfor me! I eat about 4000 calories a day and 85 to 90 of those calories are carbs (fruit)
and keep fats and proteins at 10 or less, yup the 80/10/10 and I love it! Cant wait till spring when ther will be more fruit in season!

MAN roadrunner. Your metabolism is messed up. Go on a juice fast or a master clease. I personally believe a juice fast is better because you have more juice…more nutrition. Do a 30 day one and you will not be hungry in the mornings. Though you will need nutrients if you were to not eat in the morning. Take Dr. Schulze’s SuperFood Plus as found on herbdoc.com. This is THE BEST and much cheaper than all that much fruit. It will give you a lot of energy. Also, you can buy bee pollen at your local health food store. It is fairly cheap usually, do not spend too much. Our health food store charges $7.50 a pound and you only take a tablespoon a day so t lasts a long time. Also, get into wheatgrass juice.

    shgadwa,
I did the master cleanse for 14 days in October. I love the MC! I do weekend fasts of just water for 48 hours, short term fasts are better than longer ones. Also mono fasting is the best way to fast! Like apples for 3 days, or bananas for 3 days, or grapes, etc. I dont feel you can overeat fruit. We need the carb calories, less fats. I love the 80/10/10 way of life because that is what it is, a way of life not a “diet” I maintain 160 lbs consistantly after bottoming out at 157. I went fruitarian after my master cleanse. Havent looked back! I dont feel we need superfoods like wheatgrass. All the nutrients we need are in the fruit, and the greens. And yes my metabolism is most likely messed up but I am rebuilding my body from years of eating SAD and smoking and drinking, but Ill get there! Itll happen,I am very positive on this and love this way of life, I have no problem eating 30 or more bananas a day, 4 to 6 apples, a pound or 2 of grapes! And a ton of greens at the days end. I wake up hungry because my body just spent the night cleaning house and needs more FUEL!! Fuel baby more fuel!! Not processed food and junk but real raw fuel!!

Heh, I love your enthusiasm, roadrunner!

    lol, I agree.

So back to the topic of breakfast or no breakfast, I’ve been noticing that my appetite is waning BIG time. I feel sick most of the time whenever I see or think about food. I even feel like a small, fist-sized apple looks like its going to be too much for me or too heavy. However, I still force myself to eat becuase I do not want to get unhealthy. I notice that my appetite is worse in the morning. Before I went raw, I used to STARVE in the morning. And now, the only thing thats helping me chug down my green smoothie is if I add ginger to it (helps with the nausia). I WOULD skip breakfast and not eat until I’m hungry, but the problem is that I go to high school and I usually don’t eat a lunch meal at lunch time. I HAVE to eat breakfast or else I’ll be starving later during school and when I starve, I can’t think or concentrate on my work!!! By the way, my next meal is after school around 4 pm and then I have some fruts after that until 5:30-6:00pm. Even at this meal I’m making myself eat. Does anyone know what’s wrong with me? Should I just surrender to my body and not eat and see what happens?? Any advice or comments??

  • Wow Roadrunner, I would love to eat like you! Except minus the 4000 cal. Lol. I could stand 2000 or less (need to lose 15lbs). Any tips on getting there? I find food to be a daily and CONSTANT struggle for me.

  • MOTHMOTH Raw Newbie

    Samilicious,

I would try a fast if I were you! It sounds like your digestive system is trying to rest.

  • hi kminty3, they are seeds. you can find them in any Indian store at very cheap price (around $2 or $3 per lb). You can also find them in any grocery store in herbs/spices section (usually Frontier Brand) but they’ll be expensive at $8-$10 per lb, and the price goes up to $12 in Whole Foods.

You can see a pic of Sprouted Fenugreek at

Thanks MOTH. I’ve decided to listen to my body and not eat until I feel hungry. Oh, and could this be a detox symptom? Everybody is different, right? So, we’ll see what happens!

the high calories do NOTHING as to make you gain weight because its fruit and fruit goes right thru you, quick easy energy. thats all calories are is energy. high calories in fruit is fine its the fats you want to keep at minimum like the nuts seeds and avocado. maybe its different for women as far as calorie needs all I know is the more carbs you eat(fruit) the less fat intake meaning you can eat a little more fats and theyre offset. I never gain so much as a pound since I bottomed out at 154, 157 whatever it was, I maintain 160 daily eating like this but until you stabilize you will drop weight, high fruits lots of greens and low fats and you will drop the weight till you bottom.

  • Morning is my hungriest part of the day, so I usually have a large green smoothies for and fruit/veggies with nut butters as a midmorning snack. I think everybody is different and you need to listen to your body and figure out what works for you.

  • I love breakfast and always start my day off with fruit but everyones needs are different.

If you do not mind me asking Road runner, how much money do you spend on produce in a month? How much would a weeks worth of “your diet” cost?? I think the bananas alone would be about 6-10 dollars. Do you try to save money in any way?? I found that a lot of things can be bought at clearance sale such as bananas which can be found for 25 cents a pound at one place and 19 cents a pound at save a lot. But they do not always have them ripe at that price. You have to catch it when they have it. I would think that 4000 calories would be very expensive.

  • Elizabethh I was interesed in starting a morning yoga routine and I was wondering what yours was?

  • Skipping breakfast is probably fine as long as a person does not overeat later in the day.

A New York Times article reported that skipping a meal and then overeating in the evening can result in metabolic changes that lead to diabetes. However, the article also pointed out controlled meal-skipping is not harmful and can improve health.

  • Very good point LionMouse! I’ve always loved breakfast and in fact I often dream about it and am excited to eat the moment I wake up :). When I first started a raw diet I tried Natalia Rose’s suggestions of just water/juice/fruit in the morning until lunch but in general the sugar from the fruit and the lack of protein and fat that I tend to get from nut milks and oat and nut granola left me feeling hungry (which would be distracting/inconvenient when I’m busy and also lead to too much eating in the PM). So I almost always do breakfast I’ve found that nut milk, bananas, and flax with or without some raw granola gives me energy and most importantly gets me through 2 and 1/2 hour chem lectures!

I’m definitely of the school of thought that whatever works for each invidual person is best :)

  • Lovingraw—I totally hear you on supplementing Natalia’s suggestions. I do her green lemonade in the a.m., but then I eat some cantaloupe followed by a green smoothie. And then add some fats in in the afternoon. It’s definitely all about what works best for you. Plus my theory on her diet is that because she eats so much at night (including wine), she doesn’t get hungry until later in the day and then basically can “start” her eating day later.

  • I usually have a large glass of water (right by my bed) first thing when I wake up. Then maybe some juice. I will make a green smoothie or grab a piece of fruit (lately it has been grapefruit) to bring to work and I drink/eat it once I get hungry. It seems to work for me. If I eat breakfast too late though, sometimes I end up skipping lunch since I am not hungry again yet and at 4:00 I am starving and run home and scarf down the first thing I find. So I have been trying to bring snacks and still go to lunch even if I don’t feel hungry so that I will make better food choices later in the day.
