Dehydrators

Sorry, but I’m sure this has probably been discussed a lot already. I know nothing about dehydrators and want to purchase one. What is a good dehydrator to look for? Where can I buy one and how much do they cost?

I kind of want to get one from Amazon, since they’re on sale. It’s gonna take a while to save up for one.

got mine from www.rawguru.com—a 9 tray Excaliber. Good, reliable, company. It is loud and of course runs for a long time. It came with everything I needed.

am i wrong? help i JUST purchased my very first dehydrator – the nesco 1010 with the on/off switch and heat control. it was $111 on amazon…i just didn’t want to splurge just yet because i still have to buy a good blender.

  • I received a Ronco, older model dehydrator, as a hand-me-down. There are no temp setting or on/off switch. Just a knob with vents ranging from 1 to 4. Does anyone know the temps for these four settings? I’m so afraid I’ve been “cooking” my food!

i stuck a thermometer into my ronco a while back, and it heats at 160, and i believe at all settings. the settings probably just effect the amount of moisture leaving the food and at what rate. i’m buying an excalibur in a week, but i had no idea they were loud! can anyone tell me exactly how loud? i live with six other people, and am the only vegan. they’d hate to put up with anything excruciating because of my diet.

  • does anyone have info about working without a dehydrator a friend who is a seasoned rawfoodie said that he has temped the oven and left the door cracked and gotten pretty good results as far as taste and preservation realizing that purists will not prefer or agree with this method does anyone have thoughts to share

faithew – maybe try using a lightbulb in your oven instead. there’s some post about it in the forums – or start a new post with that as the question if you’re interested. I’ve heard of the open door method, it might be less economical, but yeah it can work. use a cheap thermometer to check the temp if ya want.

mine cost me only 40 bucks and it works fine… it was actually called a Jerky Xpress because it came with the little gun people use to make jerky, and the flavorings… (YUCK) but i just threw that stuff away… (hmmm… veggie jerky??) Then I had to buy those plastic tray things seperate (the ones without holes for crackers and stuff)... so actually it cost me about 60 bucks… bought it at a drug store and the trays at a hardware store

  • Wow thank you! I gotta get this excalibur now!!! :)
