Daughter has nut allergy

My 7-year-old daughter was diagnosed this week with asthma and NUT ALLERGIES along with a mild allergy to soy. Knowing that my own asthma and allergies improved immensely when I gave up sugar and dairy (and got even better from going raw) I’d like to get my daughter as raw as possible. Without nuts, I’m not sure what protein sources that leaves her with. This is a whole different ballgame.

While I’m finding stealthy ways incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into her daily consumption (like the Harry Potter guacamole technique using long, skinny celery sticks as magic wands), we need some suggestions for milk alternatives that are not nut-, dairy- or soy-based. Are there recipes for nut-free raw cookies or raw brownies that would be somewhat familiar transition treats?

Has anyone made oat milk or rice milk? Is it difficult?

  • Hi- I have been experimenting with sprouting lentils and that could be a great solution for you. They sprout quickly and the beluga black lentils can be used as bean dip if processed. You could make cookies with coconut and dates and throw in some favorite fruit. Sugar snap peas or any fresh peas have a lot of protein- no fat either. You could try using jicama as a milk substitute- blend and strain or juice it- add a little vanilla or other flavoring.

    have you tried Sunflower seed milk? Lucy write about it here: http://www.goneraw.com/forums/3/topics/573 If your daughter can have seeds then you can substitute nuts for seeds. Sesame seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds etc.

    By the way, a human can get all their protein from vegetables and fruit. There is plenty of protein in all fruit and veggies. There is even enough protein in potatoes to satisfy recommended amounts – not that I am suggesting you and your girl eat potatoes!!

  • The other day I made Ani Phyo’s “Dreaming of Donut Holes” (you can find the recipes at aniphyo.com), they were a great treat. The original recipe does use nuts, but if you’re able to sub seeds I think they’d be great for kids (they can help roll them too). Good luck!
