Couple questions: Sun and grains

I was reading in a raw book somewhere that you dont have to worry about sun cancer when your raw. I love being out in the sun and so do my friends, they are vegan (one is trying to go raw) and always wear sunscreen when we go out swimming in the lake. I on the other hand do not. Even though I do get burnt a little more, I still feel its safer not using sun screen and being raw, because the book said its the cooked food and its poisons being baked onto your body, but when your raw you dont have those toxins. What do you think?

I havent had any grains in the past 3 months of being raw. My friend who is trying to go raw says she read in Living Cuisine that grains are important in the raw diet. How important are they? Should I be including them in my diet?

Thanks!

  • If you still burn in the sun,I would definently use sunscreen. I think a long term raw foodist could do without, but thats because they are through detox, and that process can take many years. It is possible to buy all natural sunscreens so go for it.

If you are 100% raw you should not burn – You have to be 100%.

When you put on sunscreen what you are basically doing is baking chemicals into your skin – you are adding to your toxic load. The theory is more to do with the enzymes rather than cooked food toxins in you.

Listen to Alissa Cohen Radio podcast number 3 – she talks about sunscreen, cancer and raw food.

I am extremely pale (white skin with blueish undertone) and now I just get a little pink when I first start sunning in the summer again and than I am fine – no sunscreen, no protection – no nothing! I don’t burn anymore.

I am NOT a long term raw foodist and I am not fully detoxed out either. But I am still not burning from the sun. Eat coconut before you go out into the sun and if you are concerned use some coconut oil on your skin. If you feel you are burning, just get out of the sun. 30 minutes is often sufficient to get the needed Vitamin D.

I eat grains – but I sprout mine. I don’t think grains will make a difference in protecting you from the sun if that is what you are asking.

Brown Seaweed contains fucoidin/fucose, a glyconutrient that kills cancer cells. It’s called apoptosis. I like to go outside and make vitamin D! It’s cheaper than taking supplements and more bioavailable. You shouldn’t burn if you don’t stay out too long during the hottest part of the day or if you build up a tolerence by starting slow. Chemical sunscreen and tanning lotion is just absorbed into the skin, the body’s largest organ. Why avoid toxins in your food and then put them on your body?

Some grains are beneficial, but too many can cause calcium to be leached out of bones. Sprout them first.

  • Thanks 123.

  • Im 100% and I still burn but not as much as I use to. Im not overly fond of using sunscreen but the sun is really harsh here in scandinavia, and I have a family record of skincancer. Furthermore Im the really fair skintype that just get freakles or a burn. I know suscreen isnt natural but then again theres nothing natural about the thinning ozonlayer and airpollution reflecting the suns rays. Allrighty now im ranting : ) The cool part is that everyone is different and if you just listen to your body, everything should be fine.

  • I would highly recommend avoiding all commercial sunscreens.. they cause cancer the sun DOESN”T! Hey if you’re out and think you’re getting a little to much put on a shirt or hat. I must admit I do put jojoba oil on my babies cheeks when were out too long – because she won’t leave the hat on! jojoba oil has an spf of like 16 I think, so minor protection but completely natural. As for me, raw for 6 years and don’t burn but never really knew it was because of that.. cool to know! We were out on the boat last weekend and my husband is now peeling but me … ahh beautiful tan.. same exposure.

  • oh ya about grains.. you should read Dr. Graham’s book grain damage.. it will explain a lot. Grains are NOT necessary or ideal for human consumption. Hey, do you really like the taste of a handful of barley or wheatberries? If you can’t make a meal out of it, you probably shouldn’t eat it.

  • hi jkd here is a harvard article about nutrition and they talk about grains: Enough folic acid, at least 400 micrograms a day, isn’t always easy to get from food. That’s why women of childbearing age are urged to take extra folic acid. It’s also why the US Food and Drug Administration now requires that folic acid be added to most enriched breads, flour, cornmeal, pastas, rice, and other grain products, along with the iron and other micronutrients that have been added for years.(7)

The other exciting discovery about folic acid and two other B vitamins is that they may help fight heart disease and some types of cancer. It’s too early to tell if there’s merely an association between increased intake of folic acid and other B vitamins and heart disease or cancer, or if high intakes prevent these chronic diseases.

    B Vitamins and Heart Disease

In 1968, a Boston pathologist investigaed the deaths of two children from massive strokes. Both had inherited conditions that caused them to have high levels of a protein breakdown product called homocysteine in their blood…http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/vit… i think its up to the individual person but they are a good source of folic acid.

  • Thanks eternity, I think I may stay away from them for now until and if my body starts wanting them.

I was out in the sun all day sunday swimming and cliff jumping, and my burn only hurt for one day then almost disappeared. :)

  • I have a question, are there any other oils besides coconut oil that will protect from the sun??

I relatively dark and I don’t like the idea of using sunscreen, but at the same time, a lot of sun can age the skin :|

Try olive oil. I bought a product called Egyptian Magic that contains beeswax, olive oil and love. No other ingredients. I use it as a moisturizer on my face, as a cream if my skin is dry and a conditioner if my hair needs it. It may not act as a sunscreen (I don’t think coconut oil does either), but it may help keep your skin moist until it gets that way from within. Allison

  • Hi I just read this and though it was really interesting- RED PEPPERS – SWEET potatoes, carrots and more – it’s not just chocolate that protects skin against sun damage. Research from Dr Ronald Watson at the University of Arizona has found that the antioxidants in red, yellow and orange foods build up under the skin creating extra UV protection. “The effect is so strong that eating six portions a day for about two months will build a natural barrier equivalent to a factor four sunscreen,” says Dr Watson.

  • Oh wow you guys….I just checked out this book from my ob/gyn’s office (they have a little library) called “Going Against The Grain…” Oh my goodness! It is so in depth about the dangers of grains, I’m still in shock!! I don’t eat grains myself anymore because I am so sensitive to all of them, and now I know why! Can’t believe I found this in a regular medical facility!
