Coumadin and raw diet

Hi. My mom says she can’t do the raw food diet because she’s taking coumadin (among other meds) and therefore cannot eat a lot of leafy greens – the vitamin k decreases the effectiveness of coumadin (which is an anticoagulant drug). She has a St. Jude’s valve in her heart that allows the blood to flow in and out. Her doctor says she must stay on that med for the rest of her life. Does anybody know if there’s any way around this? She is totally unhealthy – has all kinds of diseases and really needs healing from this kind of diet.

Who says you have to eat greens to do a raw diet? She could still benefit from mostly fruit diet with small amounts of nuts and such. I don’t eat any leafy greens barely at all any more. I do eat algae which has Vit K but I could certainly live without it if I wanted to.

rawcloud~ Since your mother is on some serious meds and has some very “delicate” health challenges, please seek the guidance of a integrated health professional (one who is competent in non-pharmaceutical based therapies). For some options and guidance, you might start out contacting places like the Tree of Life or Hippocrates Health Institute for resources.

Many allopathic doctors only learn about pharmaceutical based therapies and are rightly saying to their patients that the patient will be on a drug for the rest of one’s life (pharmaceuticals simply mask symptoms and not address the underlying issue).

However, when the body gets what it needs nutritionally. energetically, etc., it has tools to heal. This is where the “gold” is. When the body heals itself, one does not need as much meds, and in many cases get to the point of not needing any meds.

  • Thank you all for your responses. I will discuss these with her and see how she would like to approach this. Right now her doctor is her god and it’s been hard for me to explain to her that what they are saying is based on a SAD diet and also that the meds do mask the symptoms. I’ve told her that the coumadin she’s on is what they use for rat poison and shouldn’t that send a red flag, but her doctor wants her on it. I know time will also help her in that she will see how my life is changing since going raw. I am slowly coming off thyroid medication (she’s on that too) which will show her the possibilities for her life.

I will definitely contact Tree of Life/Hippocrates and I will also look for some good fruit dishes to make her. Again – Thank you!

rawcloud~ I have never seen the “rat poison” argument dissuade someone when it comes to taking Coumadin. Basically, making a doctor wrong or the person wrong for listening to a doctor, for the most part, doesn’t work either. It is only when a person is receptive to looking to heal rather than mask symptoms that they are open to different options that might decrease the need for the meds. More people are open to an “integrated” approach rather than an “either/or” approach. When a person has the intention of being responsible for their own wellness will the door be open to discuss other options.

You might find out (really listen to) what your mother wants for the rest of her life (a purpose?). If she wants to thrive, she will be (or become) open to options to fulfill that purpose. If she doesn’t have a purpose or doesn’t want to thrive, love her and meet her where she is at. It’s her life.

Much patience and love to you. To your wellness…

  • Bluedolfin: Ah yes. That is true…as I remember my own unwillingness to take responsibility for my own wellness at one time. I remember about 6 months ago I stumbled across something on the internet talking about the raw food diet and how I thought to myself then that that was the most silliest thing to me and how I would never do that. He he he. That still makes me laugh to think about it.

Since your mom has the valve and might be more likely to react to high levels of Vt K or anything that will interfere with her meds, ONLY means you/she needs to be more careful. I only started eating more greens this last year but there are so many foods you can still eat that are not in that family, it shouldn’t be a huge issue. Don’t buy it = don’t eat it in my diet & medical ??

Have you ever gone with her to the Dr? Asked questions about what she can and can’t eat or has a choice for meds? It is amazing what happens when people that have a clue actually ?? the medical people caring for our loved ones. and if her Dr is against a natural aproach(in combo with her meds?) then mom needs a new Dr ASAP

rawcloud~ I editted my previous post… you might want to check it out again.

Yes, it is funny looking back where we have been closed to options/information and laugh at it later… seems so obvious NOW. lol What shifted in you to look at raw food when you previously had been closed to the idea?

Have compassion for your mother where she is at.

RAWCLOUD – Another place where you may find some guidance and knowledge is from published lectures and articles by Dr, Dean Ornish. He is a renown MD who has researched and worked extensively with patients with heart disease who change to a vegetarian diet. I watched one of his lectures this weekend. His numerous studies show patient making this change who no longer need bypass surgery. In the lecture I watched, he discussed a patient who could not walk across the street who was able to climb 100 stories on a treadmill in just a month (I think I remembered that right) after going vegetarian. Surely many patients with this diagnosis are on Coumadin.

Google “Dean Ornish Coumadin” and you will get several hits. I just found a lecture where he states that those using flaxseed oil on his program may need to lower their Coumadin because the flaxseed oil provides some of the same benefits and otherwise their blood may get too thin.

Yes, Coumadin is brand name for Warfarin, which was widely used as rat poison. Scary as hell isn’t it?

  • Meditating: Thank you for the info on the Dr. I will research this and talk to my mother about that. About a year ago I brought up flaxseed oil to her too and she turned that down because she read she couldn’t do that with coumadin. So, I’ll share with her what I learn and we’ll go at her own pace.

blueyz: Good idea on going to the dr with her. Hopefully he’ll be willing to work a more natural approach.

Bluedolfin: Saw the edit. Yes my mom has a definite purpose now – my little girl. I’ve just moved back home (MN) a few months ago after being away in FL for 10 yrs so my mom missed a lot of my first daughter’s life. Now with my second daughter she gets to be a big part of it and she is just eating that up!

    I have a renewed hope. :o)
