cooked and raw foods, Im confused:S

I dont understand I thought you can eat as much of raw foods you want and not worry about calories and not worry to gain weight. Ive also noticed that I can buy a box of Kashi 7 grain cereal and have less calories and less fat from eating the whole box. I love the raw dehydrated buckwheat but people keep telling me dont eat 3 cups a day is too much , I noticed I can eat a cup of kashi cereal its only 80 caories low fat but its heated food. The buckwheat contains more calories in its raw form than its cooked form, So will I gain weight by eating it cooked or raw?? just wondering if it has some special enzymes in it or something in its raw form? Seriously I can have a whole box of kashi cereal and it will add up to the same calories in a cup of raw dehydrated buckwheat. Im sort of getting fed up on this raw diet, looks like you would lose more weight by eating cooked:S but I love raw !!!:( Im confused please help!!!

i think when you just focus on losing weight, you forget the goodness of raw foods. yeah, some raw foods are more caloric than their cooked counterpart but they are much healthier and you don't need to eat as much. the kashi cereal is just empty calories and doesn't provide nutrition. if you want to lose weight, then eat that, but if you want to get healthy and lose weight, eat the buckwheat but just not as much.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on your specific buckwheat questions or cooked vs raw questions yet (I'm only on my 4th day raw), but my question is WHY DO YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT? You're posting all over the boards freaking out about buckwheat calories, and yet you say you are quite thin. Do you have an eating disorder?

  • I just want to eat right, I just want to be haelthy and maintain my weight, thats all:O,

I just want to eat 2 cups a buckwheat a day and be happy:) Before raw, I used to eat fruit and veggies still but with some cooked food, like I used to eat rice , rice cakes, and kashi or special k cereal. I used to enjoy eating more before i went completly raw, I havnt had a cooked meal in 2 years and now im looking at raw food and I have to also worry on how much I eat, Sorry if I keep talking about buckwheat, I just need some help on it!! Thanks

Can you have a certain amount of buckwheat per day that you feel comfortable with calorically, and then find some other crunchy raw foods to snack on? There are tons of great foods out there, you don't have to restrict yourself to buckwheat. Since you're so concerned, what is it exactly that you crave about the buckwheat? The flavor? The texture? Are there similar foods you can have as well to expand your diet? Is it possible that you are deficient in some nutrient which is found in the buckwheat and that is what is causing these intense cravings? Fat or protein lack can cause a lot of varied cravings.

Besides, you will know if a certain food tends to make you gain if you actually start gaining. Say you notice a 5 lb gain a few months into consuming this level of buckwheat, then you would know to cut back and things will balance out again. It's not like you're suddenly going to balloon up 15 lbs overnight. If you start to put weight on, you'll notice it and you can adjust your diet accordingly. Don't sweat it so much. If you start to gain, it's not the end of the known universe. Just figure out what's causing the slight gain and adjust your diet or your sleep habits or your exercise or your stress or whatever.

Besides, you say in other posts that you're really thin - so why do you want to maintain? Why don't you WANT to gain, to a healthier weight?

Okay i dont want to go into extensive theories with you but heres the basic LD about this whole thing. First of all kashi makes there cereal by puffing their buckwheat, yes? If it is then your simply looking at the volume of the food and not the actual mass. Second 7 grain kashi contains well grains which is toxic to humans when uncooked. The reason you can eat buckwheat raw is because buckwheat is not a grain its actually a fruit seed. Thats the first reason its healthier for you. The next point I have is that the only reason people today are fat is generally not because over eating. Its consuming overly toxic food. When your body is storing fat on a SAD diet or pretty much any cooked diet it is actually using a defense mechanism. All of the processed foods that most people eat contain so many toxins that your liver simply cannot "clean" your body fast enough. So instead of letting all these toxins enter organs your body creates extra mass (fat) to store the toxins.

Basically what im saying is if your on a raw vegan diet you will lose weight unless your eating an excessive amount of calorie dense foods like avacados.

great info kurite. makes a lot of sense. I am pretty sure that the star of anyone's raw diet is veggies which are not really high in calories and very nutrient dense so if what you are mainly eating is vegetables there is no reason why a raw vegan should gain weight in fact i have never heard of it.

  • would it be bad to eat 20 fruits a day? mainly just pears apples and grapefruit, mango, strawberry? I eat greens , I love romaine i blend it in with other veggies. Im just concerned about the buckwheat if I can eat 2 cups a day. I seriously would go back to cooked food, some cooked foods are less calories and less in carbs. I just want to maintain. I ust dont know if I should add in something more in my diet. what about almond butter or some almonds ,or chia seeds ,I really dont know.

sweet, your diet sounds fine to me with the exception of so much buckwheat. personally, i don't eat it anymore, but it's a good transition food instead of cereal. there isn't a right answer for how much fruit you need. everyone weighs a different amount and all of our activity levels differ. why don't you put all your intake into fitday.com and see how many calories you get?

  • Thanks for the info!!!

I just ordered four bags of raw dehydrated buckwheat, im thinking of just eating a cup a day . Im going to add some sprouted lentils too so I have variety. Is lentils a good food to eat raw?
