Cheese flavor without nuts?

Is there a way to achieve a cheese-like flavor without using nuts? Are there any spices or something similar I can use as a substitute?

Nutritional yeast – except it not really raw. If you are transitioning and not 100% though it is very cheesy and salty tasting.

  • Check out the cheezit recipe by omshanti on this site. It’s really cheezy but it’s crackers not dip.- OOPs I guess you said without nuts! Let me know if anyting works out.

What is Nutritional yeast? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it before. Is it available at the grocery store or is it more of a specialized item?

Nutritional yeast is pretty easy to find. It’s loaded with B vitamins and has been a traditional vegan staple for years. I get mine at Whole Foods. It comes in a big container. Its a flaky powder and is candida free. It acts as a thickener in sauces/spreads. And it is not raw but sometimes its a decent compromise if you want a cheese-like taste without nuts.

Asofetida or ‘hing’ is useful in creating crackers with red bell peppers, tomato and oregano. The whole thing tastes quite cheesy. I’ve been thinking about this lately too! I would probably make some sushi using a sunflower pate blended with red bell pepper, oregano and hing. Just use as a paste if you want to minimise the use of seeds/nuts. Add a few other grated veggies. Roll up, then place in dehydrator at 145 for about an hour.

    Sweetpea,

Is Hing hard to find? Would Whole Foods have a clue? It sounds like something I’d like to try to avoid nutritional yeast as well as nuts.

    Thanks!

I thought Hing resembled onions not cheese. I have never had it but that is what I have heard. It is used in east Indian cooking.

I think Whole Foods might sell in the spices section.
