are broken flaxseeds toxic

i just got a dehydrator to experiment with crackers , when i got told whatever i did not to break the flaxseed/ linseed in any way but to keep them whole as they become highly toxic when exposed to dehydration because of the fats in them
any one shed light on this particular subject…..

  • I’ve never heard that before- in fact, I’ve been told that it’s best for digestive purposes to grind flax seeds before making crackers. Hmm- anyone else know something I don’t?

I think maybe because the oils in flaxseeds go rancid very quickly? Grinding/breaking the seeds is the way to get to the omega 3, though. What I do is grind my fresh and eat them up immediately or I grind some and store it in the freezer.

I have made crackers and ground a small potion of the flax, but I find the texture of the crackers is not the same as leaving them whole. They were not as crispy or somthing. I did not like them as much as when left whole!

As far as toxicity goes, I don’t know for sure, but what Alix1962 said makes sense.

I have completely heard opposite- I have been grinding my flaxseeds for years because they pass through the body untouched when in their whole form. I have never felt any toxicity from this! Where did your hear this? I know that cooking flaxseed oil causes it to change structure and become unrecognizable in our body..but dehydrating should not be an issue.

I’ve been grinding my flaxseeds and storing in the freezer for years. It’s definitely not toxic. Not only that, but the whole seed passes through undigested, so it’s more nutricious to grind. I make flax crackers with both whole and ground seeds. That way they bind well, have a nice crunch, and are super nutricious.

  • I think that they are definitely not toxic, I eat a lot every day and I’m still alive :)
Maybe if you would heat them to a high temperature in an oven or something their structure would change, but in a dehydrator it no way happens!

  • Carmentina and flybaby are correct. The only way to get to the highly nutritious good stuff in the flax seed is to get it open before you swallow it. Either by chewing really really well, or grinding the seeds before you add them to your recipe.
I like raw cookbook author Gabriella Chavez’s technique. Take your recipe for crackers (whatever recipe you like) and add your flax seeds in your food processor, then add water, just to cover them. leave for 4 to 8 hours. This will ‘wake them up’ and make them alive. Then blend well. Then add the rest of your ingredients. Then pour it onto your teflex & dehydrate!
