Are all herbs & bottled spices raw? Is there a list of raw and non-raw? Mustard seed? Poppy seed? Chili powder???

  • I believe most are heat processed for your “safety.”

No, most spices are not raw. Organic is the next best option to raw.

Generally spices are processed at a temp of about 80 -120f degrees. Some also come toasted.

  • Buy your spices whole from any Indian store. They are as natural as they can be, i’m not sure about the “raw-ness” though. Atleast cumin, mustard, fenugreek, coriander seeds are raw, i suppose

i was nervous about this when i first went raw. bottom line: spices aren’t really food. i mean, you couldn’t eat them solo. as long as they are non-irradiated, i use them in moderation. fresh herbs are far tastier in raw food anyway (in my humble opinion).

for info on heating of herbs call whole foods (or your local store’s supplier). they are very willing to answer questions.

  • A few spice brands are labeling their products “Raw” and Organic. In Canada we have a brand called Advantage Health. They curently carry only a few “raw” spices. I’m sure over time more brands will start selling “raw” spices.

  • I think most of the spices available in Helath Food stores (such as WF) are dry roasted (atleast Frontier Brand I know)

Does anyone know where you can get spices that are not heated?
