almonds that WILL sprout?!

Help! Where do you get your raw almonds that actually sprout??!
I’m looking to order some raw almonds in the US or Canada that actually are raw. So far I’ve purchased organic raw almonds from naturalzing.com and rawfromthefarm.com and neither of them seemed to sprout after soaking for 12 hours. Anyone purchased from these sites or other sites and had success? I feel like I’m getting ripped off, shelling out a lot of money for “truly raw almonds” means you should get truly raw almonds!!
Thanks everyone :-)

The almonds I bought from almonds-from-california.com , also did not sprout.

  • I purchased really raw wild almonds from realrawfoods.com in British Columbia, Canada and they sprouted! The make nut milk that doesn’t separate too…yummmmmm

Emlee – I use hazelnuts quite a bit now.

rAWngish teechr – Thanks for the info. :)

They can’t be raw if they don’t sprout. Or is there any other processing aside from heat that would cause them to not be able to sprout?

  • angie207angie207 Raw Master

rAWngish teechr – It’s www.realrawfood.com – with the “s” on the end, it redirected me to another site.

Don’t purchase shelled nuts. They are usually cooked (especially almonds from California – it’s illegal to sell them raw there even if they’re labeled “truly raw”), but, actually, contain toxins from being exposed to the air. I don’t think you can buy any raw nuts unless they are in the shell. Zoe’s right they just won’t sprout if they’re not raw. I have gravitated away from any nuts for this reason, and I don’t digest them well. Avocado is my favorite alternative, and so is young coconut.

rAWengish teechr Wow did they really sprout? You mean they grow tails? How long are they? I might be ordering some almonds from them. They seem to have a lot of different types of raw almonds – which ones did you get?

I think in the US all the nuts are getting cooked but it’s good to know Canada is a reliable source. Thanks.

I recently read somewhere that you can no longer get real raw almonds from California, they passed some law recently regulating how they are produced. Somebody mentioned a site on here once where you can buy real organic raw almonds. I wish I knew where the post was because I need some. The Whole Foods here charges over $10/pld for organic raw almonds.

  • rAWngish teechr- Did you have to spend over $100? I tried ordering from them earlier this week because they seemed like a reliable source but they e-mailed me back they have a min. of $100. I cannot spend that much on almonds and would like to try them first before spending that much anyway! But thanks for the tip :)
If these almonds I’m buying really aren’t raw I might as well just buy cheaper ones from the bulk isle at the grocery store where I don’t have to pay shipping and handling either!
I need the almonds for almond milk cuz I cannot live without my raw cereal. I am allergic to way too many things and would go crazy without it! This almond thing is annoying :-/
Zoe- Would freezing make them not sprout? RawfromtheFarm states their almonds are frozen to kill insects but not heated in any way. I e-mailed them and they said:
“All of our almonds have not been heat treated in any way. We always get them the bulk up and get a little nub on the end, which is the description that sprouting charts give for almonds. We have had some customers say they have grown a tail as well after a few days. We haven’t tried that ourselves.”

Maybe I should try sprouting them again since I still have a small amount left. What should they look like after 1 day of sprouting?

I just saw sproutable almonds for sale on naturalzing.com. They are not in-shell, but they are supposed to be sproutable. :)

  • The law about California almonds is true. HOWEVER…it’s true for grocers. Not for all farmers. For most, yes.

But at my local year round farmers market I’ve befriended 2 farmers who’s almonds are in fact raw.

So….it’s not all of California!! I must represent!

  • Trader Joe’s has organic raw Valencia almonds imported from Spain, and they sprouted for me. However, the non-organic California grown almonds from there do not sprout. Even TJ’s raw cashews sprout. :)

  • KevlarKevlar Raw Newbie

    WTF?! The cashews sprouted??? Sweet!

    Trader Joe’s, here I come!

  • Yep, I let them soak for 3 hours with no intention of sprouting them, and they literally grew tails!

  • The only downside is TJ’s raw cashews aren’t organic. :(

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

achin- nope, I’ve purchased their almonds a million times and no sprouts just mold.

When you say cashews “sprout”, do you mean they grow tails? What about the almonds? How long were the tails? And, yes, I can’t spend $100 worth of almonds without trying them first. Oh well, maybe I’ll add some dried fruit to the order. Those Halawi dates look good.

Also, any input on the sproutability of Real Raw Food’s raw cashews? If they’re worth it I’ll get them.

Hey I just placed an order with Real Raw Foods. But, I saw nowhere to enter my credit card information. I just selected “Call with credit information later” or something like that. ?

  • beate64beate64 Raw Newbie

yes, they will call you back to get your credit card info. They are just family operated and dont have the card option installed on their website. Good luck, hope you like what you get :))

That’s been quite a discussion here since there are NO raw almonds in the US anymore that can be shipped. You must pick them up directly from the grower. However, i also had the same experience as Kevlar. i paid more $ for organic unpasturized almonds from the same company. i did my little experiment and so wanted to believe there was actually a sprout there, but when i repeated it with a few more almonds, nothing sprouted and i had 10 pounds of dead almonds! i don’t mess with them. i’ve switched to walnuts for most things—they make wonderful pies, brownies and frostings. I think we tend to overeat almonds anyway. Think variety. pine nuts, walnuts, sunseeds. I still use pecans infrequently. Almonds are dead to me. BTW- for real raw foods to ship to the US???? Big $!!

  • RawKid-Yes the cashews grew tails. I didn’t let the almonds go long enough to grow big tails since I read somewhere not to. But the end was swollen, and when I broke them open, there was a tail like thing going down the middle and just about coming out the end.

I ordered a bunch of goodies from the. Halawi dates, wild almonds, sprouted almond butter, pistachios, cashews, cocoa powder, and a few others I believe. By the way, how long did it take for you to receive your order? I can’t wait :)

lzhpt: My order was 7 pounds and shipping from Canada was only $18. GREAT deal if you ask me. I live in Maryland. I don’t think ANY nuts in stores are raw, and that probably (???) includes walnuts. I do agree, though, almond consumption is WAYY to high on a raw diet.

  • Sorry about the delay in responding to the questions – lots of essays to mark:(

angie – sorry about the wrong internet address and thanks for the correction:)

rawkidchef – I soaked them for about 8 hours, then put them in my sprouter covered for about a day, then when I went to make almond milk, I noticed very small tails. I didn’t let them go further, but it certainly looked like sprouting to me. I’m soaking some more now, so I’ll try again, though it is not as warm at this time of year.

I did have to spend $100, but I bought other great items like goji berries, dates, cashews, mesquite, lucuma, and they have the best raw nori sheets every!

My order from BC to Ontario (Ottawa), so nearly 4000kms, took only 5 days, though I would think it would be more if it is crossing the border. The company has great ethics too, which is important to me.

I’ll let you know if my cashews and these almonds sprout!

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

Hey rAWngish teechr! I placed an order with them Thursday. I was hoping they might come today (lol I’m spoiled by quick shipping) but that’s probably not going to happen. Hopefully they will sprout for me. Thanks. :)

  • I wonder what kind of customs check your order will go through, Rawkid…..I hope they aren’t “killed” by the machines. :(

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

Why are you saying that superfood? Lots of people in the US order from real raw foods and are as happy as could be with their nuts.

  • There were so many comments, that I kind of missed one about pine nuts. Used to be able to get them in the shell, no longer available. Never tried to sprout them shelled. Anyone else? Also what was that website you all were talking about ordering raw nuts from?

    Thank you.

I recently read in "the Raw Truth" that almonds need to be kept at 57 degrees F to sprout-- so Id guess that many failed attempts are from being kept at normal room temperature...

  • hey Emlee ! I know it has been long time from your last post, please tell me did you like almonds from /ftp.realrawfood.zenutech.com.?. Are they able to sprout ? I'm new on raw food and i would like to buy truly raw almonds,or maybe do you have another suggestions?
