allergic to fruit?

juicyjuicy Raw Newbie

Hi everyone. I have noticed this happening for the past 2 years, but now am really questioning it. I can’t eat an apple, pear or cherries just bite for bite with out getting an allergic reaction- itchy mouth, rash, etc. I was not like this as a child and it is frustrating! I have to cut apples and pears and cherries up off their core or make sure they really don’t touch the outside of my mouth. Anyone else experience this or know why this happens? I buy organic produce so it can’t be pesticides!

I get the same reaction with pineapple.

  • Not sure why it happens…maybe the acidity of the fruit or the acidity of your skin when the fruit touches??? But, I too get the same reaction with pineapple and papaya.

  • The same thing happens to me with Apples and Peaches.

oh yes, peaches! it happens to me with peaches too! is there a doctor in the house? i am dying to know how to fix this!

  • My doctor told me that the peach thing has to do with the fuzz.

I had to go to the hospital after I went to a peach orchard when I was younger.

    You can only imagine…

do you wash it with anything before eating it?

And are you storing them near mangoes?

And if you are storing them in your fridge, have you tried cleaning the drawers where you are storing them in case there is some sort of residue in the drawers that is causing this?

rawmama- i do rinse them before eating, but just with water. And with regards to the fridge thing, I can get a reaction from something that has never been in a fridge, just came out of the grocery bag, or on the counter. And no mangoes in sight. I’m stumped!

  • Juicy,
It is know as the Latex-Fruit allergy. Do a google search on it. I myself have it and get bad reactions (itchy, irritated and or burning sensations in the mouth and throat) from kiwis, melons, avocados and to a lesser extent, figs, pineapples, tomatos, etc. I haven’t eaten any of these in a long time so I don’t remember the exact severity of my reactions them. But for me, the worst are the kiwis, melons and avos. As far as how to “fix it”, all you can do is avoid the substances (or in this case fruits) in question.

    Peace,
    Randall
