I’m vegan. Very interested in going raw.
(I apologise for all my odd posts at the moment by the way, I’m as high as a kite, just had a tooth out.)
How do you recommend me starting to go raw? I read about trying a few days at a time. Is this a good idea?
I’m sorry about the tooth; I hope you’re not in a lot of pain, Jeebs! Maybe today might be a good day to use the blender or processor and make yourself some raw apple sauce or other fruit puree!
I went almost 100 percent raw at once, so I would not recommend it. Why don’t you start with 50 percent raw? Like one good cooked meal a day with say, a raw breakfast and dinner? (I’d keep lunch the cooked meal because people tend to sleep better on a raw meal at night. Better digestion)
The Garden Diet folks have a little schedule to use on going raw. It’s actually made for meat/dairy eaters who want to go completely vegan raw but since you’re already vegan, you wouldn’t take so many months to wean.
Start with adding more raw fruits and vegetables to your diet and increase from there. The transitional recipes on this site would be a fun way to begin.
One approach I read once was that you should try to focus on making one meal a day raw. Like start with breakfast. Once you have breakfast down, move to the next meal.
Hey Jeebs, I’m new to this thing, too. I was vegan, and just decided to go raw after I picked up and looked through (and bought) Raw Food Real World at the bookstore. It was a seamless and easy transition for me—I gave my bread and bagels to my dog, and am gradually getting rid of rice and beans and stuff by cooking those for her, too. I think she’s enjoying this as much as me!
I eat mostly fruit smoothies, salads, and I bought a bunch of nuts and have been using them a lot. I also like finding random recipes on here or other sites, and in the one raw cookbook I have.
Raw staples for me, now, are normal fruits and salad stuff, and especially avocados, young coconuts, tomatoes, fresh basil, bananas, grapefruit, lemons, cucumbers, carrots, romaine and butter lettuce, spinach, and pineapple. In the cabinets I rely on sea salt (actually on the counter), agave nectar, brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Oh, and dates, too—I forgot how good those things are
I did the vegan to raw thing a couple weeks ago, and it was easy and I have never felt better. I quickly lost the extra 10 lbs I weighed, I am full of energy during the day yet can fall asleep with ease at night, which I have never in my life been able to do.
I also quit drinking coffee after it ran out, and have been drinking tea, which isn’t raw, but seems to fit.

i would gauge your speed by how “clean” your current diet is. like are you a health food vegan, or a soy-cheese and french fries kind of vegan? if the latter, go slowly. starting with your morning meal, then being “raw till dinner” is a good plan of attack until you are “mostly raw” and so on…
i feel like a broken record sometimes, but i found natalia rose’s books very helpful for transtioning… raw food detox diet and raw life force energy.

Yes I was tempted to jump head first into it and go 100% but I doubt I would be able to keep it up. I’ll probably try to do a meal a day like some of you have suggested.
