  • Urgent Advice Needed.   3 days 2 hours ago

Thank you for the advice and the link. It all looks helpful.

I was sorry to raise a couple of carnivorous responses. I am trying to be a raw vegan; therefore, I am interested in the matter; therefore, I want to discuss and learn. Those who have fully adjusted to raw veganism ought to want to help those who struggle, both in the brain and in the tummy.

I don't want to to follow a diet that requires me to live in a particular time, in a state of relative affluence. If raw veganism is 'natural', the way that we are meant to be, and the way that we used to be (both according to many views), then it ought not to be dependent on modern conditions. Could I effectively follow a sufficiently nutritious raw diet anywhere in the World, with only the locally available sources of nutrition and with no artificial supplements? That's a question, not a challenge to anyone's beliefs. I want the honest answer to be 'yes'.

Superfood 2, I think that you are referring to the process in which animals produce B12 from what they consume. However, everything that I read on the subject states that other than in supplements, the B12 that is available and beneficial for humans comes from animals. The Vegan Society recommends that vegans take B12 supplements. Isn't that why pernicious anaemia used to be very common in vegans? I keep trying to find B12 in plant sources and was delighted to find that dark chocolate is a source. Perhaps we can find others.

I find the eating of meat abhorrent, and I have developed a distaste for eggs and milk. I want to eat only fruit, vegetables, cereals and nuts. But I want to understand what I am doing and why.

Now, assuming that I manage to sort out the tummy, I'd be grateful for some practical recipes (which are probably in the other forums, but don't people like spreading their advice around?). Recently, I had a five hours rail journey, followed by dinner with a colleague at a hotel, followed next day by a long meeting and another five hours railway journey. (I asked for salad starter and main course at the hotel and was presented with two heaps of rocket with some tiny bits of cucumber and cherry tomato, all floating in dressing). What simple meals could I prepare that I could eat in various states of transit, and which wouldn't leave me needing comfort breaks every few minutes. (because leaves just don't do the trick when it comes to soaking up liquids)?

I hope for further helpful responses.

    Regards,

    Gabrielle.

  • Becoming Raw for healh   3 days 2 hours ago

    Hi
I have arthritis following a couple of really bad episodes of food poisoning a few years ago and I have been eating a high raw diet for a few weeks now. This was recommended to me recently by an immunologist who said that raw food with a ratio of 2 veg to 1 fruit with nuts and seeds was the best thing I could do for my joints .. This certainly seems to be the case and I am finding that the pain is gone .
I am also finding that when I slip back into eating mainly cooked food for a day then my joints start to twinge again
( this happens when I am away from home and have not catered for myself )
Wine also gives me a lot of pain so I have stopped drinking alcohol
At the moment I eat raw during the day with a little cooked food in the evening
I had been so tired and feeling stressed and ill because l was full of food intolerances. I decided that I wanted to detox slowly rather than go all raw immediately. I started eliminating foods from my diet over the summer as I had a high histamine overload.. The Immunologist found I was intolerant to alcohol, yeast, sugar, milk products and fish. Just giving these food up help my health and since going high raw I am finding that my energy is returning and I am starting to feel much better.. it is very exciting.
I live in England so am far away from you . but I want you to know you are not alone - I am on the same path.
I find this site is very supportive and enlightening.

  • Pumpkin Pudding   3 days 3 hours ago

This was the first recipe I tried using raw pumpkin, and it made me a little queasy. The flavour was great, I think I probably just can't "do" raw squash - I tried a great raw butternut squash recipe from this site, and it made me feel the same way.

    :(

Maybe I'll try the same ingredients with sweet potato?

  • Umm..? about bowel movements..=)   3 days 3 hours ago

your stool should be loose (not diarrhoea). remember the food doesn't stay very long in your bowels. a bit of a private question, has the smell of your stool changed? if you haven't noticed then you should pay atttention. in addition the colour is often lighter. well at least that's how i have experienced it in my short raw/semi-raw periods.

i'm looking foward to going full raw or at least 80%

  • what do you do when you had a really hard day ???   3 days 4 hours ago

I think it comes with time and what you tell yourself in that time. Only in the past couple of months have I been able to pretty much overcome the issue of not giving in when life was tough. For me I had to find a new level of self love. I feel like I now love myself too much to put bad things into my body when things are already going badly. The ultimate test for me has come within the last 2 weeks of my life as I have had some really hard things happen to me, and I have continued to eat healthy. Because I love me and I want to feel good. I know that putting good things into my body will actually make it easier to cope. So I gues sbasically what I do is remind myself of this.

I you really want to get there then eventually, you will. :)

  • BlendTec vs. VitaMix!   3 days 4 hours ago

    Hi Rona,

    Thanks for your response.

I am thinking about buying a super vitamix for Christmas.

I will email you when I get the vitamix because I do not know anybody who has one. Everything I know about it is from online.

    Thanks
    Mike

  • Probably the strangest question ever asked....   3 days 4 hours ago

I remember hearing that if you don't have an appendix then you can't digest grass. I am not sure why or if this means that you can if you do have one, lol. Hmmm.....

  • weight gain while BF   3 days 4 hours ago

Raw family says that it is all in the green juices. I noticed that I lost more weight when my juicer was broken.
I do yoga, I love it, it is exercise and meditation in one.
    Are you feeling better already?

  • Pregnant and sick, cannot support raw food. Help!   3 days 4 hours ago

Well, it seems that I am being punished now for leaving the 'raw path'. My sickness is mostly gone, but I am having a heavy faryngitis (throat infection). It hurts so much when I swallow. I try to drink water, because of the nursing, but it hurts so much. Now I can't eat or drink anything anymore, cooked or raw.

  • weight gain while BF   3 days 5 hours ago

I agree, but keep in mind that everyone is different. How your body responds to food and exercise depends on so many factors that each person basically has to find their own way of going about it.

  • weight gain while BF   3 days 5 hours ago

make sure you increase your calorie intake when you exercise. i bike 6-12 miles every day and i feel like i have to eat a lot of food to maintain my weight. i out-eat pretty much all of my friends and i am the thinnest of the bunch. but it's because you burn a lot of calories when you bike around, more than you would think - especially if you are towing a kid in a seat.

that said, my legs used to be twiggy sticks and now they are nicely toned, shapely and feel really strong. i get compliments all the time. my pants fit a little tight around the thighs now and that's much better than the way they used to just hang from my hips.

so yeah, biking is great, but make sure you compensate with lots more calories.

  • Probably the strangest question ever asked....   3 days 5 hours ago

It's the stringy fibers in the grass that we can't chew or digest... But you can juice it without problems... Hope this helps... smile

  • weight gain while BF   3 days 5 hours ago

Biking consistently would definitely be good. However "enough" depends on your goals and your body. Start out with the biking and whatever else you choose, then after a couple weeks adjust your program depending on how much progress you are making. I would recommend some core exercises every day, i.e. pushups, situps, pullups, body squats, etc. If you are out of shape then doing this for just 5-10 minutes every day will help you a lot. Try doing it right after you wake up every day. Personally, I am a fan of the crossfit progam and mentality. Check it out here: http://crossfit.com/

  • weight gain while BF   3 days 6 hours ago

yea i am lacking excerise --- do you think bike riding with my bike seat for my son would be enouph excerise?

  • What You Ate Today   3 days 6 hours ago

sv3, just curious but how much hummus do you eat?? i've noticed when i do eat it, i could eat half a package or even a whole one if i felt like it. i don't have much restraint because it's so delicious.

  • Motivation?   3 days 6 hours ago

Thanks Suasoria, it played a huge part in helping me turn vegan. It was the worst thing I've ever seen and it will stay with me forever. Whenever I struggle - I just think back to that and know I can never go back.

  • What You Ate Today   3 days 7 hours ago

Been away for a long weekend so been out of my usual routine. Having said that, I did manage to eat loads of fruit, some soaked nuts/seeds and a bit of salad. I also didn't binge on naughty foods which I sometimes do when I'm away.
    Today I've had:

    Buckwheat porridge with blueberries
Carrot, cucumber & red pepper with hummus
    Apple with a few raisins
    Carob pod

Tonight I'm going out for dinner so my will power will be tested yet again!

lulushka8 - you gotta try the buckwheat porridge - it's the best!

    Marvelous Guidance

    Day 12 11/18/09…(352 to go)

Woke up at 8am found Apple puppy just as happy as ever ☺…HORRAY! Phew man what a horrible anxiety ridden 24 hours. I had no excuse for my mess up yesterday! I am going to come up with a different option to soothe myself for when I just have those really really horrible days. I noticed that Dr. D Graham has some recipes for “celebration” food in his recipe book, so I think those will have to be what I do when I just need that feeling everything is going to be all right, until I learn how to cope with my feelings in the moment…I don’t know about you guys, but for me that is a hefty task, so celebration food it is! Here is great advice I rcvd from two of my fourum friends:

    1. it can be very challenging when one has emotional difficulties.
There have been very difficult times in my life where I have continued with the fruit diet, even though it was temping to eat or drink something that would numb me a bit to the pain.
However, I continued with the fruit diet, and I really think that it was one of the things that helped carry me through the difficult times.
It may have been easier short term to have numbed my feelings, but I know through experience that long term I benefit because the fruit diet does not give quick fixes but rather it helps me because it allows me to heal properly and fully rather than just numbing the pain.
So, for me, my past knowledge of how a fruit diet helps me in an appropriate way, rather than just papering over the cracks or covering up the problem, is what helps me to stay in the diet, rather than reach for something that will just numb my emotions.
Recently I lost my dear kitten, in tragic circumstances. The pain was so much, I just wanted something to numb all the feelings. I could really understand why people use drugs or food to take the edge of what can be very 'raw' when one is on a raw diet.
But I do think that not numbing the pain although harder in the short term, allows our emotions to run unhampered; and in the long term I do think we may heal more effectively if we allow full rein to our feelings.
I look to my own past experiences when dealing with emotionally challenges. So maybe as you progress along the raw path, you will be able to use your own personal experiences of the diet's capacity for emotional as well as physical healing to strengthen you on those days when the dark clouds settle. So I think that things do become easier the longer you have been raw. It can be very challenging when you first start out.

I also find that exercise can really help to channel frustration and other emotions into something more positive.
Or just try to change your focus from food into something else; have a nice relaxing bath or have a massage or do an activity that you enjoy.
I think it helps to remember that the long-term raw solutions are not always the quickest or easiest but in the big scheme of things they are the most effective.

    2. Practice being present and poised. If we allow our minds to tell us things are tough we can't improve. If we go for a walk or sit still and practice presence, we the joy within will bubble up and harmony will be ours. Raw is not a prize; health is the ongoing goal.

I plan to read these every morning, so that I remember to live in the present, and deal with my emotions correctly. Not only am I practicing this diet for the outer health benefits, but also for the inner ones too….There is not a lot you can run and hide from on this diet…no more eating or drinking yourself into an oblivion, and the eye opener is that we all do this a lot more than we think. I’d like to propose a challenge. Try to only eat when you are truly hungry this week, not bored, not tired, not because it’s lunch time, because you are truly hungry…see how you feel!

~Tried to get all this stuff done today, as my list of things to do keeps growing!, but with this little pup I get like 1 thing done a day…being a puppy mommy is harder than you think folks…time consuming? no LIFE CONSUMING!

I did punish myself for eating cooked food yesterday tho. I cleaned the entire house…I don’t even hate cleaning, I LOATHE it (in scary Ursula voice).

I didn’t eat enough today, completely devoted my day to making sure apple puppy had everything she needed exactly when she needed it. I need to get some bananas I have ran out, these are my big calorie uppers, and tummy fillers.

I am supposed to go for breakfast or lunch tomorrow with my gf, Here is my plan of attack: drink a BIG smoothie before I go. Bring a baggie with some strawberries, and mint. Have a little tuber ware of oj, or apple juice….order mixed greens with cucumber, and add my own toppings! Hope the server isn’t annoyed ;)…i think I would be…haha, but of course everything annoys me (in sly, guilty voice)

    11/17/09 meal analysis
breakfast grapes/strawberries, 1 fig, lunch box figs, dinner sprout salad, and cherry tomatoes.

    11/17/09 Activities
watching the puppy all day, took her to get her decahedra out, watched her some more

    11/17/09 Symptoms
still dealing with my cooked food conundrum! …You may be asking why is eating cooked food so bad?!? Please read this http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/cooking-our-food/ I have many other books and articles, if you are interested just leave a comment, and I will direct you ;)
Eyes still dry, itchy and red, itchy nose, sneezing, tinky pee. Have bad anxiety and am exhausted for obvious reasons other than food.
Message from Dr. D (makes me happy my worst symptom is sneezing..well so far who knows what’s to come)
Detox can be generalized, but your specific symptoms will likely be
unique, to the individual. From black tar coming out of the umbilicus
to phantom pains to burning feet to sleeping 500+ hours in a month
to inexplicable depression to almost unbearable kidney pain; I have
seen such things and more, and watched people come out the other
side happier, healthier, and better than ever.

Am I a boring blogger??? Any tips for a revamp? Promise to not include so much apple next blog ;) more 811 talk

  • Becoming Raw for healh   3 days 7 hours ago

Have you thought up going to a "meet up" for vegetarians, vegans, or raw foodists? I know yahoo does them. There may be another networking/ search engine that does something like that? But, I know yahoo does. It's a good way to find like minded people.

good for you, Koaselino!! it's so encouraging to see those health improvements, especially when they happen so quickly. it's like your body is telling you how much it loves and appreciates what you're doing. just imagine how many more wonderful health benefits await you on this path. when it gets tough living in an area where most people don't understand the raw lifestyle, remember that we're here for you! i know we all really value the support we find on this site. (and i'm sorry to hear about your mom -- sending lots of good healing thoughts her way.)

  • Probably the strangest question ever asked....   3 days 9 hours ago

I wonder what the big difference is between lawn grass and wheat grass used for juicing. Growing wheat grass seems like a huge pain in the butt. Now what if you could just pick some grass from your lawn everday and juice that!? (I agree that eating lawn grass might not be easy to digest but what about juicing it??)

  • coffee in the mornings?   3 days 9 hours ago

My technique in getting off coffee is to just have one cup per day for a week or so (if you're having more than that) then switch to black tea for about a week, then green tea, then herbal tea. This way, you are easing your body off the caffeine. For me, the coffee isn't necessarily the addiction, its that I like to have something warm and tasty in the morning. So, the teas work well for me. When you are down to herbal tea, maybe you'll want to make the switch to warm water with lemon and/or ginger or something else that is tasty and considered raw.

And, I agree with others that making too many changes at once can shock the system and make you swing back into bad SAD eating. Good luck!
