I love Kim-Chi but my roommates don't like to smell garlic seeping off me. :( haha I'm making some today. MMMM! I think fermented cabbage feels the best of all the fermented foods I eat. I suppose do to the large amounts of lacto bacilli. YUM!
He may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals, and so his body feels the need to eat more. I used to eat ALL day before going raw. Bee pollen, Sole (mineral rich salt water in small doses-you can make yourself google if unfamiliar), superfoods, and greens, will help him get his minerals and such built up. Adding more bananas, raw fats to salads, sprouting wheat or buckwheat for granola, eating dates, and other dried fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. helps you feel fuller as well as get in calories. And eating 80% raw still gives the benefits of raw , if he wants or feels he needs a cooked meal. :)
i am a raw dyke. i dont know much about general lgbt groups but pretty much every lesbian i know is at least vegetarian, so its not that much of a strench, unlike when i am mixing in the mainsteam world of employment and every1 just thinks raw is so out there.
Congrats on your success! I would watch a couple of videos about chicken farming and this might help deminish your chicken cravings. (I've heard Meet your Meat is one to watch)
If you are after something cooked and filling, but still healthy, try baked sweet potatoes or butternut squash. Tasty and satisfying but not too taxing on your system.
Keep up the good work.
I havent met any lgbt in my raw adventures as a matter of fact most of the raw foodists I meet tend to be older. I havent really met many only when Im visiting a health food store or Raw restaurant....Mersey, I checked out the giveittomeraw but youre right its been dead for a while...
I agree, it comes with time too. But The moment I'd feel upset, I'd eat something with Magnesium, as it is lost during stress, and has a calming effect. Greens do the best, and my go-to was Spirulina, or...Cacao ;) Excercise, no matter how much you don't want it, does wonders.
I don't have any info on connecting solely with lgbt raw foodies if you were asking that. But the few raw people I have met offline, were lesbians. And from what I see on alot of raw sites there is a fair amount of the lgbt community. :)
Maybe it's just a phase you're going through. I tend to have periods where I want diffrent things. At the moment, I'm not really into salads when I used to love them. I'm craving more fruit at the moment and also nuts/seeds/grains. I've decided to go with this and see what happens. It's winter at the moment so I'm sure this is why my tastes are changing. Once the weather gets warmer, I'm sure I'll be loving my salads/greens again.
I, personally, have noticed what feels like my liver cleansing itself after I have coffee on a rare occasion. My body is able to handle the effects better now, and my sensitive tastes enjoy it better as well.
"Everything in moderation, including moderation." :)
JB, I know what you mean - I love hummus and have to watch I don't scoff the whole pack! (I'm actually just eating some now!!) I tend to eat a small tub over a few days so guess it would be about 50-100g per serving. I sometimes make my own so it's raw but I don't beat myself up for buying it non raw.
So far today:
Smoothie - Banana, mixed berries, spirulina, date syrup (First time I've had spirulina and I'm really not keen on the taste!)
Carrot & hummus
Lunch will be my usual concoction of chopped apple, mixed seeds, buckwheaties, raisins & soya yoghurt
Pre-Zamba snack will be a banana & a couple of dates
Dinner will be sweet potato & veggies
i love coffee, too. it's been my biggest vice since i was mid-teens, and giving it up has been super hard. i'm worried about dipping back into the coffee pot, since i just moved to oregon and it's cold as you-know-what here.
a small amount every once in a while isn't going to really hurt you, and i'm glad you enjoyed it! coffee really is superdelicious! i know it's hard once you've been raw for a while... everything you eat that isn't raw makes you feel guilty. the truth is, you are already doing something so good for your body that the one cup of coffee you have isn't going to offset it. :)
Welcome, Koaselino! We're happy you're here! And the great thing about raw is that it just continues to make your life better. This week your joint pain clears up, next week you notice that your skin is glowing... it's a roller coaster of goodness! And if you haven't experienced a little of it already, the emotional wellness that comes from being raw is really, really powerful and life-changing. Anyway, get excited! You're going to have a great time being raw!
sugar cravings are normally related to low calcium. you should holler at some mustard greens, turnip greens, lambsquarter, okra, or parsley (my fave!). go heavy on greens for a few days, and see if your sugar cravings clear up. it usually works like a charm. :)
if I crave something, I tell myself "I love myself enough to consume only fresh, whole, ripe, raw, and (sometimes) organic fruits and vegetables. These two foods love me and I love them back. " Works every time.
My Oster does the green smoothies fine, although I slice the apples and pears first.
The blender was on sale at Walmart for 50 bucks so I'm willing to slice, it does have 700 watts.
Whatever blender you have, enjoy the treats, Gil
Wow! I'm brand new here too and VERY suprised to find another person who grew up in Northeast Oregon. I don't think there are many of us. I joined the military at eighteen (had to get out) but still miss and love that part of the world. I am actually going back in a month. My husband is being deployed to Africa for a year and I am going to stay with family during that time. I plan on staying with my dad for the summer--who is a farmer (go figure). I very much want to incorporate some of the raw lifestyle into his world. He eats horribly and suffers from depression and high blood pressure. One thing I can say about living in rural areas is that you have an overabundance of area to grow your own vegetables. We currently live in a suburb outside Chicago and have nowhere to put a garden. I can't WAIT to start a garden at my dad's place. That, and I will have wheatgrass just steps away after spring planting :) However, I know that people in Northeast Oregon don't really understand the whole "vegan thing" --not to mention raw vegan. I haven't even told my sister what I've been doing because I just know the comments I will get (as her husband is out back skinning an elk). ++But that's a whole different post and I don't want to steal yours++ So let me just say that it is very nice to meet you and I hope to see you around here--if not in eastern Oregon somewhere :)
This past week, green smoothies have been about half fruit and half romaine lettuce or sometimes green leaf lettuce. Once when it didn't taste good, I put it back on the blender and squeezed a third of a lime into it and added a sliced up apple, blended til very smooth and it was very tasty.
Sometimes, some parsley or cinlantro or collard green or cucumber too.
The fruit is usually a dozen grapes, one apple or pear, a banana, and a few times some pineapple.
It's a nice start of a day and I usually forget about coffee or tea, Gil.
Heyyyyyyyyy! How is everyone? This season is busy but I thought I'd check in on everyone. juicefastfan, how are your daughters? Missemmy, feeling any better? Welcome Tallmako. Question...has anyone ever made a dyhdrated crepe-y wrap sorta thing with pears??? Just curious.
Mine are also loose, sometimes they are soft (like soft served ice cream...sorry for the details!), but other times it's almost like diarrhea. I've noticed that if I eat more fat, like nuts and avocado or bread, my stools get harder.
When I go for colonics the therapist can't believe how unformed my stools are.
I'm like you joannabanana, I would much rather have loose stools than be constipated (and I also go about 4 times a day!).
I don't think your natural diet would include your processed cereals and nuts. If you lived near the equator (as we all need sunshine as well as tropical fruits), you could live your natural diet of fruits and vegetables seasonally and locally. Wherever you are, if you want to live frugally, why not plant a garden?
I don't see, however, what our society's reliance on a made-up idea of a piece of paper being worth something and subsequently assigning a value and charging a dollar amount to something, has to do with the best diet. I would get another job if I couldn't afford to live healthfully. Really. I have before, too, where I worked full-time during the week and then also both weekend days from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. That wasn't fun, but I wanted to live a certain lifestyle. I ended up burning more energy/calories that way and needing to eat more. haha!!
Animals are fed SYNTHETIC B12 supplements.
For your rail trips and such, have you considered green smoothies with bananas and spinach, water? Maybe apples or apple juice? That's what I would do!
Ah, the green juices are helping with the skin dryness and itchiness I had with the change of seasons! I feel (and look) so much better and more hydrated now. :)
I must go and find a copy of Earthlings, now. I'm glad someone started this thread on motivation. It reinforces my reasons, and helps me to remember what I need to do to help keep my family on the right path :)
Because of some of the above comments, I started watching Earthlings. I made it about 15-20 minutes into it before my boyfriend came home from work and found me bawling. We both decided at that moment to be more conscious of what we are bringing into our home. He has always been hooked on cheese and is now committed to not having it in the house and having more awareness when choosing foods.

I would increase your fresh fruit, decrease your nuts (or eliminate them for a bit).

Thanks for mentioning the film!
